Gaddum Centre Paediatric Palliative Care Service provides a needs-led therapeutic service for families in Manchester, Salford, Rochdale and Stockport in which there is a child with a life limiting or life threatening illness, or any time after a child has died in this way. The service is available for the child, siblings, parents, carers, extended family and friends. We are happy to work with the whole family or individual members.
This specialist service provides an opportunity for individuals to talk about and explore their feelings with someone who is not directly involved in their situation. We can work together to clarify thoughts and feelings, and develop coping strategies for the difficult times. Family support can help family members to talk more openly with each other so that they are more able to understand and support each other. When working with children we use a variety of creative and non-verbal therapeutic methods, such as art and play therapy to help them explore their feelings. The intervention will continue for as long as is necessary, and can take place at school, home or another place in which the individual feels comfortable.
Families can refer themselves or be referred by any relevant professional; making telephone contact with us on: 0161 834 6069. We will then work together to identify what kind of support would best meet the family’s needs. A referral form is sent out to families/professionals for completion and on its return the family name is placed onto the referral list and an acknowledgement letter sent out.
We provide a separate worker for direct work with adults; and telephone support or information is offered to referrers, parents & carers by our professional team between 9am – 4pm throughout the week.
