Counselling in Primary Care
Description of the Service
Gaddum Centre currently has 11 counsellors working in GP practices in the city of Manchester /CITY />. The model of practice used offers both emotional and practical support to people needing coping strategies to work through a period of stress or change in their lives. This work is complementary to other services and therapies. GPs see referral to the service as a preventative measure. The 'problem solving' approach employed brings together the best of advocacy practice and the best of counselling, resulting in very positive feedback from both service users and professionals. All the counsellors employed are trained and qualified staff aware of child protection procedures and mental health issues.
The advantage of using an independent accountable agency for this service is extremely beneficial for both the surgery and the patient.
Who can use the service?
The patients of GPs with Gaddum Centre counsellors based at their surgeries. People are referred because of bereavement, sexual abuse, relationship difficulties, stress at work, anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress disorder to highlight a few.
